my cafotel

I'm in the hospitality business, and am opening my own cafe and boutique hotel sometime soon. This is a site for all the things that inspire me. Feel free to drop by and show me what inspires you.

If I've unintentionally used any of your pictures, and you want it off, just drop me a line.

We’re Renovating!

Folks, it’s just another friendly reminder that we’ll be closed until the 17th June to facilitate the completion of our new wing.

We’ll be back in business and raring to go once everything’s done. Trust us, you’re going to love it!

Outpost Cafe

I hear a lot about cafes. Actually, I read a lot about cafes, find out what is being tweeted, read certain publications, make a list, check it four times, then go on an adventure. Outpost Cafe had been on my list for a while and today I finally had a chance to get there.

Outpost cafe is NO LONGER AFFILIATED with St. Ali. In the last 9 months new owners have taken over, new management, new everything. So! It would seem that there is still some attention being given to them in certain publications based on their originals owners, when in fact blah blah blah. Now, I was told by someone who works at the cafe that the change over was in the last 9 months, but checking out the most recent ‘review’ on Urbanspoon which is a link from The Weekly Review, this reviewer talked about cold drip and espressos with single origin notes….that article was written in June of 2011. I’ll leave the detective work to someone else this time.

At the moment they do not have:

  • Siphon Coffee. It will be available soon and “we’re just starting to have it”.
  • Single Origin Coffee. I’m sure that will come though.
  • Cold drop coffee.

While I was there a guy walked in.

“Do you have any single origin coffee?”

“Single orange juice?”

“No…er…I’ll just have a latte.”

This guy was carrying a copy of SHORTBLK. Ahem, out of date listings much?

Espresso
Dabbles of caramel, bitter chemical aftertastes. Nothing amazing. Not single origin. Roast flavours. Some kind of coffee being put, no, it’s being forced through a La Mazocco machine. Here we have the whole let’s have a good coffee machine and hope it brings in people but lets not worry about the beans.

I dont think the guy next to me with his Market Lane coffee flavour journal is too impressed with the coffee either.

After speaking to one of the floor staff I was informed that the new owners want to uphold the status of what the original Outpost had. They have started by employing a good chef who works in the open plan kitchen. I told the her how the other guy who came was asking for single origin coffee, I explained to her what that meant (because I’m so awesome - not), then gave her a crash course explanation in what cold drip coffee is.

So, readers and tasters, Outpost is under new management and need time to find their caffeinated feet.

The chef was discussing what the menu and sandwiches and everything else will be like soon. Keep an eye on them.

I hope they change their whiteboard “Specialty Coffee Served! Come in and see us!”. There is no specialty coffee here at the moment.

The Final Step
The Final Step has the friendliness of a local neighbourhood cafe in one of Melbourne’s most busiest and ‘private-school-education’ suburbs. That’s right, I’m talking about South Yarra.

Walk around the corner of Toorak Road in to Murphy Street and you’ll take your final step for about an hour. Once you set foot in this cafe, you wont want to leave for a while.

The Final Step is compact and uses its space well. Communal table in the middle, and single tables by the wall. If you’re partial to basking in the sun while wearing your Raybans then there are seats outside too. People walk in every minute - new faces and familiar faces. The staff treat everyone with the same friendliness.

Espresso. Guatemala - Santa Clara

A lovely crema was perched on top of this coffee belle of the East, the body below was delicious. This drop made me think of syrup. It was sweet but tart enough to remind me of all things bitter and healthy for the darkened soul. It had sweet caramels with a medium viscosity.

The herb and cheese scone was warm and light. Not too doughy, right amount of everything.

Cold Drip. Guatemala - Santa Clara

Sweet and bitter, cool and refreshing. I also detected cocoa undertones and an oily residue on my tongue after several sips, this was a treat. A fantastic beverage with an equally fantastic taste that was well suited for the day’s weather.
You know how I harp on about sitting in a cafe and studying or reading a book for hours on end? I did that here. It works. It’s possible. It’s comfortable.

A friend of mine brought us here. It’s one of her favorite hole-in-the-wall coffee places because of the coffee and super cutie-patootie baristas.
*sigh* Brings back such beautiful memories…
